Tips for Taking Beautiful Mother-Child Photos

Mother’s Day isn’t only a day to thank our mothers for everything they do for us (which we ought to do much more than once a year, anyway!).

It’s also a celebration of the bond between mother and child. And what better way to document just how special that bond is than with some beautiful mother and child photos?

Whether the “child” in that pairing is a newborn baby or an adult her- or himself, here are some great tips for taking beautiful mother and child photos.

Focus on the small, everyday moments.

Source: Sofi’s Snapshots

So much of mothering happens in the small, seemingly insignificant moments: making school lunches, wiping a tear, reading a book before bed. With an older child or adult, it might be taking the time to share dessert together, or having a fun or silly conversation.

And yet, as any mother knows, these are the moments that make parenting such a precious journey. These moments also, therefore, make beautiful pictures.

Try capturing mom and child when they’re doing the things they do every day. There’s no need to get too ambitious with your setting or activities. Especially with younger children, you’ll likely get the best results if everyone is in a familiar place where they feel comfortable.

Go for the close-up.

Close-ups can be wonderful for mother-child portraits, because it’s in a close-up that you can often catch a similarity of expression, or see the family resemblance.

These can work just as well for posed portraits as candid ones. You don’t always need to focus on faces, either – close-ups of a mother’s and her child’s hands, or feet, or even the backs of their heads can be very moving.

Get multi-generational.

Multi-generational portraits can be a wonderful way to show the bond between multiple mothers and children – from grandmothers or great-grandmothers right down to babes in arms.

To get a good photo, you’ll want to do some solid planning. It can be difficult to get everyone in one spot, especially if grandparents or adult children live in different cities. If you have a baby or young child, you’ll have to plan for a good time of day, too.

These can make beautiful gifts for all the mothers in your family.

Let the children be children

Mothers of young children know that expecting children to be portrait-ready at any given moment is a recipe for disappointment. So instead of having a very specific idea of what you want, it may be better to come up with a range of ideas, and focus on staying flexible throughout the portrait session.

This is why candid photos can be so effective with younger kids. This setup allows mothers and children to simply enjoy being together – which is what you want to capture in a portrait, anyway.

After you’ve snapped those lovely images, make sure you display them – don’t keep them locked up in a file on your computer or stashed in a drawer!

Whether that means adding them to a special Mother’s Day playlist on your Nixplay Iris, or decorating your family room wall with a few framed prints, getting those photos off your email and into the light of day will allow you to enjoy those moments much, much more.

What Your Mom Really Wants for Mother’s Day

Moms can be some of the most difficult people to buy gifts for. Why? Because for whatever reason, lots of moms just won’t come out and say what it is they want for a gift.

Maybe they’ll say “I’m sure I’ll love whatever you get me.”

Or “Just get something you think I’ll like.”

Or even “I don’t need anything – I have you.”

And as nice as all that is, here’s a newsflash, mamas – your children want to give you something! Moms are some of the most important people in our lives. We want to honor your love, sacrifice, and commitment to giving your children the very best life possible.

Mom may keep quiet about what she wants with her children, but there are ways to figure it out if you’re just a bit sneaky (hint: ask her best girlfriend). Here are a few ideas for things that your mom really wants this year.

Having someone else cook dinner – a nice, big, family-style one.

If your mom is the one who usually cooks, then there’s no way she should be the one making dinner on Mother’s Day. Rather than going out, which can be fun but also stressful with kids, make a big family meal at home while Mom relaxes with a glass of wine and her feet up.

An uninterrupted nap.

Moms can never get enough sleep, and even if she manages to squeeze in a nap, it’s usually interrupted by cries of “Mommy! Mommy!” within a few minutes.

This Mother’s Day, give Mom some time to nap without the distraction of children running around. Take the kids out for ice cream or on a fun outing, and give Mom an empty – and silent – house for a few hours. She’ll thank you for it.

A professional house cleaning.

Even in the most equal of partnerships, moms tend to do the bulk of the housecleaning. With kids, the tidying up is neverending, so splurge on a professional housecleaning and give Mom the day – or a few – off.

Even if it just lasts half an hour, having all the grit and grime removed by the pros will at least give Mom a head start on next week’s cleaning.

A day to be the fun, no-rules parent.

Whether they’re single or partnered, most moms find themselves having to fill the role of structure-creator and rule-enforcer with their kids. Do your homework. Clear your dishes. Make your bed. Don’t touch your brother. Stop pushing your sister.

Who knew, but moms just want to have fun, too! Have Dad or another family member take on the role of rule-enforcer for the day, and allow mom the freedom to let her hair down with the kids. Go swimming, to a theme park, or somewhere else fun and have someone else decide when sunscreen needs to be applied or when it’s time for lunch.

Some chocolate or dessert that no one else eats.

Kids have a way of getting into your chocolate stash – unless you have a really good hiding place. Get mom some gourmet chocolate or other decadent treats, and let her in on your secret spot. That way, they won’t have disappeared the next time she needs a chocolate fix.

A heartfelt, homemade gift from her kids.

Kids, even if you’re too old for the homemade cards, bookmarks, and potholders that you used to make your mom when you were little, know that your mom still loves getting homemade gifts from you.

That can mean a special dessert you whip up from scratch. It could mean a thoughtful photo collage of pictures from throughout your childhood. Or if you’re artistic, create a painting, drawing, or other piece of artwork for her.

Having someone else organize the photos.

As much fun as it is to look through old photos, actually taking the time to organize them is…not so much fun.

This is doubly true for digital photos, as clicking through an endless string of images and sorting them into folders can take its toll with eyestrain and headaches. If mom is the one who primarily handles your family photo-sorting, give her a break and take it on yourself.

Divide your photos up by year, event, or however else she sorts them, and store them neatly. One great way to make sure those beautifully sorted photos get seen is to send them to a Nixplay Cloud WiFi Digital Frame. You can create specific playlists – even one just for Mom.

7 Thoughtful Ways to Show Your Mom You Love Her Even When You’re Not There

When you’re seven years old, you can’t imagine being anywhere without your mom can you? I remember being small and my mom saying something casually like ‘when you’re older and live on your own…’ and I was horrified!

‘But Mommy!’ I would protest, ‘I’m going to live with you forever and ever!”

‘Oh yes,’ she would say, smiling, ‘of course you are.’

And then lo and behold, you grow up.

Although your relationship with your mom changes, she is still massively important to you, and you’ll want to stay in touch, and do little things to show her that you love her, even when you’re not there in person.

We’re lucky that technology nowadays makes it incredibly easy to connect with people, but sometimes it’s nice to think outside the text message box. To get you started, I’ve come up with seven cute ideas for thoughtful ways to show your mom you love her, even when you’re not there.

Write your mom a letter

A proper one – not an email! This will be fun for you, as well as a lovely thing for your mom to receive, as it gives you the perfect excuse to buy some new stationery! (As if you needed one.) If you’re not quite ready to go for a full letter then even just sending a postcard when you’re out and about is a lovely way to show your mom you’re thinking of her.

Song request

Does your mom have a favourite radio station that she listens to all the time? If so, get in touch with them and request a song or a shout out. How cool will it be for your mom to suddenly hear her own name read out on the radio?

Photo frame fun

Get your mom a Nixplay Wifi digital frame for Mother’s Day this year and you can send her photos all year round – it really is the gift that keeps on giving! It’s a very natural way to stay in touch, and can be fun too. My grown up daughter loves to send pictures of herself to my frame at home, ideally doing ridiculous things like eating chips or hanging socks on her washing line. (Simple things, simple minds…)

Turn a photo into a work of art

My mom loves a good puzzle, so I was very pleased with myself recently when I found a website that turned family photos into jigsaw puzzles – how cool?! You can have photos made into virtually anything nowadays – puzzles, posters, canvases – you could even get your own face on a baseball cap for your mom! She’d find it hard to forget you then.

Make a mix tape

Okay, so it might not be an actual cassette tape, like the good old days, but nothing says you care like putting together a thoughtful mix of someone’s favourite songs. It’s pretty easy to put together a CD mix or, if your mom is a bit more technologically savvy, you could even set her up a Spotify playlist.

Start a souvenir box

If you don’t see your mom very often, how about putting together a souvenir box to take with you when you visit? In it you can collect little mementos from your day to day life – ticket stubs, postcards, funny pictures, anything you like. When you see each other, the box will act as a prompt so that you can fill your mom in on everything you’ve been doing since you last saw her. It should be fun for you too to look back at everything you’ve done and probably forgotten about!

5 Incredible Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day as a Family

Mother’s Day brunches, breakfast in bed, and flowers are all lovely ways to celebrate mom on her special day.

But how about celebrations that include the whole family? After all, a little quality time is always in order – especially if mom or dad has been especially busy with work or other obligations recently. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to put away all other distractions and focus solely on what matters: family.

Here are a few ideas for ways to celebrate Mother’s Day as a family.

Declare a screen-free day.

Most of us know by now how detrimental screen time can be for growing brains. But our electronics in general are pulling us all away from each other, and cutting into time that families used to spend together.

Enjoy some real quality time together by having everyone in the family take a break from their phones and tablets. If you can make it a full day, go for it! If not, shoot for a full morning or afternoon, and use that time to play a game together, get outside, or do something else fun as a family.

Host a casual Mother’s Day get-together for a few families.

If you have other families that you and your kids are close to, why not share the love and host a little get-together to celebrate all the moms?

There’s no need to get elaborate. You can host anything from a simple cook-out outside, to an ice cream sundae bar or dessert hour. A fun idea for moms with daughters is a fancy mother-daughter tea, complete with finger sandwiches and petit fours.

Go through your photos together.

Have a whole stack (or folder on your computer) of family photos that you haven’t looked at in a while? Gather together as a family and go through them, reminiscing or telling stories about the pictures you see.

If your family is into arts and crafts, you could take some of the photos and make a family collage. You could also put hard copy photos into photo albums, or organize your digital photos into playlists on your Nixplay WiFi Cloud Digital Frame.

Visit a museum, park, or garden.

Chances are there are a lot of fun activities to do in your town or a nearby city that you may not have experienced as a family. Museums, parks, botanical gardens, a zoo or aquarium – there are all kinds of places that are just a little bit special and make for excellent family outings.

Write a story or paint a picture together.

Indulge your creativity as a family and create a work of art together! The kids will get a kick out of being creative with mom, and you’ll get to enjoy the freedom of being a kid again.

If you want to write a family story, start your kids off with a simple prompt – “It was a dark and stormy night…” always works – and take turns adding elements to the story. Write it down or record it with your phone so you can all enjoy this moment again years down the road.

Painting, coloring, or drawing together can also be great fun. You can work on your own individual works of art if you like, but consider making a collaborative painting or drawing, too. These can not only foster a greater sense of togetherness, but they’re also a unique way to teach kids about teamwork.

Mother’s Day is about mom, of course, but it’s also about family. Celebrate the beauty of family together this Mother’s Day – for more ideas, read “5 Surprises for Mom This Mother’s Day.”

Make Your Wedding Photos Shine with These Unique Ideas

Wedding season has arrived, and if you’re one of the lucky men or women tying the knot this year then you’re probably neck-deep in preparations.

While you’ve (hopefully) already picked a photographer by now, you may not have taken the time yet to think of particular shots that you want. In fact, many people assume the photographer will just start snapping away, and that they don’t need to offer much or any direction.

While that is certainly an option if you trust your photographer, you might be happier with the results if you think about specific images, poses, or scenes that you’d like to have. From your typical posed wedding party photos to candid shots of you and your new husband or wife, there are tons of “standard” shots that most wedding photographers try to capture.

If you want something more than standard, here are a few ideas to help make your wedding photos as unique as you are.

You and your bride/groom holding your parents’ wedding photos

This is a lovely idea for couples who want to honor their parents’ legacy of love. Find a print of your parents’ and your spouse-to-be’s parents on their wedding day, and hold them out in front of you.

You and your spouse can either be facing the camera or turned toward each other, but you want to have the photographer frame the shot around the photographs. For optimal results, make sure the prints are the same size.

An aerial view of the wedding dress

It’s nearly impossible to have too many shots of a bride in her wedding dress. After all, she’ll only wear it once!

In addition to the more traditional shots of the dress on its hanger and of the bride getting ready, consider an aerial view. There are a few ways to pull this off, but the easiest is to having the photographer shoot the bride walking down the stairs from an upper story. Make sure he or she captures the full train and veil.

Another great pose is to sit or lie down, and have bridesmaids or attendants spread the dress out to showcase its full glory. A photographer can then shoot a photo of you from above.

Individual portraits of the wedding party

Bridesmaids and groomsmen always get photographed together. Why not give each of them their own moment in the sun with an individual portrait? It’s a great way to showcase each attendant’s personality, and the portraits themselves will make wonderful gifts.

Photos of your musicians

If you opted for a live band instead of a DJ, you’ll definitely want some photos of the musicians for your wedding album.

Photos of the band during a particularly swingin’ tune, as well as ones that capture the energy of your guests on the dance floor along with that of the performers, will interject some action in among the rest of your wedding photos.

Multiple generations

Pictures of multiple generations of your family can be a touching reminder of the continuity of life.

Whether that’s a grandfather, father, and son, a grandmother, mother, and daughter, or even a grandparent, the bride or groom, and the bride or groom’s child, generational photos add a beautiful touch to the traditional wedding photo lineup. In addition to the typical posed portrait, you could ask your photographer to take a shot of your clasped hands.

Style shots from the neck down

Take a portrait from the neck down to really emphasize the stylish beauty of the wedding dress and groom’s suit. It might feel a little odd at first, but having the photographer leave your head out of the picture will focus the viewer’s eyes on your clothes. You’ll be able to notice details that you otherwise might miss.

No matter what kind of wedding photos you decide on, making sure you have an effective way to display them after the guests have gone, the cake is eaten, and you’ve started your life as husband and wife.

With a wedding playlist on your Nixplay Cloud WiFi Digital Frame, friends and family will be able to see all your beautiful images – not just a single one.
