Designer Spotlight: The Story Behind Nix Lux

In this Designer Spotlight, Lawrence Chu, Principal Designer, Head of Industrial Design and a master of cultures, tells us how the NIX Lux product line has evolved to become a digital picture frame with an elegant design that gives you the stunning simplicity that you want.

Tell us your story, where do you come from and how did you get here?

lawrence chu

Lawrence has traveled across the world to learn the process of making

I consider myself to be from many different places, depending on which period of my life you’d ask about. Although I was born in Hong Kong, and grew up in Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco, Vancouver, Seattle, Toronto, and Shenzhen, I view them all as home. I consider myself a global citizen and my travels have embedded me with a deep cultural empathy between East and West. I spent the last decade in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Being at the heart of the world’s hubs for manufacturing and innovation, I came to be exposed to the incredible processes of ‘making’. This is where things are being made on a global scale. The projects that I encountered in Asia have been wide ranging from corporate to independent businesses in various product categories such as utility housewares, sporting apparel, electrical appliances, consumer electronics, fashion jewelry, high-end audio to automotive and pet goods. Asia is an exciting place for design.

Tell us in one sentence what NIX Lux means to you.
NIX Lux is a beautiful, premium, and affordable digital photo frame designed for that person who cares about their home décor and is looking for an effortless way to showcase the photos that have been stuck in an SD or USB memory device that are often left forgotten about in some drawer.

Nix Lux Digital Frame Silver 13"

Nix Lux Silver 13″ fits your home decor

How is the NIX Lux different from the other NIX products and other non-connected frames in the market? What were your design objectives when you came up with the NIX Lux?

If you look at the current NIX range, it looks quite generic by today’s standards. This wasn’t always the case. Nearly a decade ago, there weren’t many fast adopters in the industry and NIX was a pioneering business leading in quality, customer services, and technology in non-connected digital photo frames, both in the U.S. and around the world. We were the first to implement Hu-Motion™ sensor technology to reduce the energy use of the digital photo frames.

Fast forward to today and the entire category is flooded with frames that look like our NIX range. This generic range of frames are mostly all black, made of plastic, and do not visually fit in with the home and living environment.

NIX Lux was on a mission to redefine what a digital photo frame can be for the everyday home, particularly to those that do care about their home décor and interior design. We wanted to migrate some of the aesthetic excellence we know that our loyal customers loved from our industry defining models such as Nixplay Seed and Iris. The visual brand language is defined by having a sculptural back to the frame which is carried over from the Nixplay Seed and Iris WiFi connected frame range. From the front of the frame, it’s very premium, made with a unique technology that wasn’t widely available in the NIX Advance era. The wooden touch seen on the NIX Lux is made with real wood veneer, and the technology fuses plastic and wood seamlessly allowing for a luxury aesthetic. There’s little comparison to anything available on the market at present.

Functionally, NIX Lux comes with a host of unique design features that makes it more user friendly. It offers adjustable viewing angles which was previously not available in the NIX series. The entire NIX Lux range can also be wall-mountable with an added accessory. There is an auto-rotation feature supported by a gravity sensor, which lets our customers view their photos in both horizontal and vertical mode by simply rotating the frame 90 degrees. Compared with other non-connected devices in the market, majority of these devices are overly simplified and reduced to the bare minimum cost production and feature-wise. These frames do not pay attention to the user experience from either a visual or interactive perspective. I think that some of these features makes the NIX Lux unique from the rest of the market.

NIX Lux is an interesting name, how did you come up with it?
Yes, I can’t take credit for the name ‘Lux’. We actually brainstormed and came up with a stack of names. We looked at what was happening in the consumer electronics market and logic behind the naming conventions of various brands and none of them worked for us.

Peter O’Kelly, our General Manager, was the primary generator for the word ‘Lux’ for this digital frame range. It took some time, but it gradually resonated within the organization and we just went with it. I think it works because we are looking to provide an elevated level of luxury to this new NIX product range, and now there’s a name to go with it.

Describe your creative process with regard to NIX Lux and what makes your approach unique?
The approach to design is quite standardized, no special magic there. We began the design through the process of empathy – attempting to understand our customer’s needs – versus what technology and our business can provide. We practice ‘design thinking’ in Nixplay, which begins with understanding and observations. We conducted a lot of research with our existing audience to make sure that we were creating things that they were expecting of us. By listening to them, we were also able to define the opportunity gap and learnt what our new potential customers would be looking for. Some of those things were decorative elements, improved usability, better display quality, and a new standard of craftsmanship in our products. Through painful, but necessary iterations of discussions and questions, we eventually defined what the product should be. Then we endlessly ideated and prototyped to ensure that there was a balance between what the technology could deliver, what our business stakeholders were aligned to, whether the solution was aligned with our customers’ needs and wants. These attributes come together to create an overall higher quality and standard of product.

Nix and Nixplay products are built through the process of ‘design thinking’

What part did consumer feedback play in your design process? What was the most difficult part of the product design process for NIX Lux?
Consumers have a huge voice in the design process; the other being that of the business stakeholders, our investors. The design comes in as the mediator between these voices. Between the design group at Nixplay, we try to keep a balance between these key players and what they are looking for in the evolution of our brand as we execute designs.

That is easily the hardest part of my job. When I first joined the organization, there were a lot of things that I needed to learn in order to come to an understanding for what was needed of me. I also had to discover a method to understand our users through different immersive design research tools. There were lots of empathy activities that needed to be documented and shared before alignment could be achieved.

What do you use your NIX frame for?
At the moment, I use the 13” Wood NIX Lux frame to display art works as I am into retro sci-fi futuristic illustrations. There are several artists that I enjoy seeing the works of such as Syd Mead (Bladerunner), Daniel Simon (Tron), and Scott Robertson (Minority Report). It’s the nerd designer in me speaking now, but I believe that everyone would have different preferences on what type of content they want to use their displays for. Some people like to use it for portraits of family and friends, which I also do. Overall, I think that the NIX Lux is a beautiful digital photo display that would look good in any living room, regardless of what you showcase.

Unique Photo Displays For The Home

While most of us carry hundreds of photos around on our phones, they don’t tend to get much love.

We may flip through them while we’re waiting at the doctor’s office, or glance at a few favorites before we settle into bed, but those images deserve better—they are your most precious memories, after all.

Through photos, you can capture our most special family moments, from milestones like a child’s graduation to small everyday moments such as the joy of baking cookies with Grandma.

As a digital frame company, we’re firm believers in displaying your most treasured photos so that everyone you love can see them. But that sentiment extends to printed photos, too.

Spend some time choosing a few of your favorite photos and display them with pride, whether they’re snaps of the beloved family pet or photos with friends. Here are a few photo display ideas to help you get going.

A Modern Geometric Photo Display.

Source: The Caldwell Project

Use string, baker’s twine or wire and some thin nails to create this modern, unique photo display.

As you can read in the instructions at The Caldwell Project, mapping out the display isn’t the easiest thing to do. However, once you’ve done it and have created your shapes on the wall, the only thing left to do is to clip your photos to the string.

You can use a lot or just a few, depending on whether you’re going for an eclectic or sparse look.

Create An Easy Photo Collage.

Source: Bits of Everything

You don’t need to buy expensive collage frames to create beautiful photo collages!

With some time and a few simple craft supplies, you can create a collage exactly to your liking. All you need are a black (or another color, if you prefer) foam core board, some double-sided tape, Mod Podge, and your favorite photos.

To start, map out your design with cut-up scrap paper.

Once you know everything will fit the way you’d like, cut your photos as needed (the image above uses 4-inch squares) and secure them to the board using tape.

Then, simply paint over the entire board with Mod Podge.

As mentioned in the blog post, Mod Podge dries clear, even though it will appear white as you paint it on.

Custom Photo Decals

Source: Paper Culture

The company Paper Culture creates very cool custom photo decals that cling to your wall, allowing you to change your display any time you like without worrying about nail holes or stubborn adhesive.

The decals come in various designs and sizes. You can create a superhero wall for your kids, a colorful or a sophisticated gallery wall for your entryway, or a sweet photo collage for your nursery. All their decals are eco-friendly, and the company plants a tree for every order you make.

Unique Paint Chip Display

Source: Better Homes & Gardens

This totally unique idea comes from Better Homes & Gardens. Instead of printing your photos onto photo paper, use large paint chips that you’ve cut down to the proper size.

Use a black-and-white photo or transform a favorite photo into black-and-white. Then, simply feed the paint chips into your printer.

The color gradient will give your image a contemporary, striking look that’s sure to be noticed by everyone who walks throughyour door. This display works best with several photos on different color paint chips. Displaying family photos has never looked better!

A Brief Guide to Displaying Fine Art Photographs

You’ve finally gotten that beautiful photograph you’ve wanted – the one you couldn’t take your eyes off of when you first saw it. It’s no run-of-the-mill photograph, either. It’s a piece of fine art that you just had to have for your home.

So now what? How do you display it in a manner that both protects it, and presents it in the best light?

Here are some tips for perfectly displaying that new fine art photograph in your home.

Framing

It might seem like the most obvious aspect of the process, but selecting the right frame is extremely important. And you absolutely do need a frame to display the photo properly.

Remember, an unframed photo isn’t just less attractive. It also leaves the photograph unprotected from damage by light, air, even fingerprints from the younger members of your household. Frame it like the valued item it is.

Types of frames

Not only do you need a frame – you also need the right type of frame for your new photographic masterpiece. Wooden frames are actually cheaper to buy than metal ones, and a deeply finished wooden frame can lend a real feel of elegance to your picture.

But metal frames shouldn’t necessarily be disregarded altogether. They’re generally easier to work with than wooden frames, and there are cases when a well-made metal kit frame may fit the style of your photograph better.

And don’t forget about colors in your frames, either. A well-polished black is a good modern approach, and silver is a solid choice for those with more traditional tastes.

As far as a finish on wooden or metal frames, a more muted luster is generally better than a highly polished shine, which can be distracting.

Hanging

What kind of wall are you displaying the photo on? At what height will you place it? Do you want your photo to be right at eye level, or mounted above a mantel or shelf?

You might want to consider what’s called “gallery height” for your photo, which is at a height of about 58 inches. If your photo is one of a series of pictures you’ll be hanging, they should be at the same height for the best presentation.

Even though you may have a great eye, it’s best not to guess whether your picture is hanging evenly. Instead, pull out your level to make sure.

Matting: Dry, conservation or pressure sensitive

While most frames that you buy at an arts and crafts store come with mats already included, if your piece is highly valuable you may want to choose a custom frame and custom mat. You can have this done at a frame store, or you can do it yourself.

There are several different methods you can use.

Dry mounting means you’re affixing the photo to a rigid backing. The main advantage of this process is that it can remove wrinkles and creases from the picture, but it’s also an irreversible process. Once you’ve dry mounted a photo, you’re stuck with it whether it worked or not.

If you’re looking for something more temporary, try pressure-sensitive mounting. It’s a procedure that’s similar to dry mounting, but it uses a special adhesive that doesn’t activate until it’s been applied to the photo. Then you simply apply pressure until the photo is in a fixed position.

On the positive side, it’s an easy process to pressure-mount a photo, and it’s inexpensive. It’s an ideal method for beginners who want to display a photo nicely.

As we mentioned, however, this is a temporary process. The adhesive isn’t powerful enough to hold the photo for a long period of time, so you’ll have to reapply at some point.

For most artwork you frame, you’ll want to use conservation matting. This method uses an acid-free mount board, hinges and acid-free tape.

The positive aspect of this approach is that it’s an excellent way to protect artwork that’s going to be displayed over a long period of time.

Unless the piece you’re displaying is of museum quality, you can almost certainly find conservation matting materials at a local frame store or arts and crafts store, and complete the process yourself.

Don’t forget that your digital photos can be beautifully displayed, too. For a stylish, elegant frame that will let you show off your family’s most precious digital images, try the Nixplay Iris.

6 Fun Ways to Integrate Family Photos Into Your Home Decor

Photos are meant to be seen – especially the ones that document our favorite moments with the ones we love. Whether that’s a candid photo from your last roadtrip, a special selfie with the one you love, or a beautiful family portrait, displaying your family photos can add warmth and depth to any room.

But sometimes, figuring out how to tastefully display your family pictures so that they add, rather than distract, from the overall decor can be a challenge. Here are 6 tips for displaying your family photos to their best advantage.

  1. Create a gallery wall. Hanging lots of pictures in one large grouping can be a great way to display family photos, especially if you want to keep the pictures relegated to one spot. There are many ways you can lay out your photo wall, but here are some general guidelines:

    • Create a focal point by having a center photo at eye level.
    • Mix and match images of different shapes, sizes, and orientation.
    • Choose mats of matching colors to keep your display from looking chaotic.
    • Consider selecting one larger photo to serve as an anchor for the rest of your family photos.
  2. Arrange images in stand-up frames on a shelf, end table, or bookshelf. When working with standing photos, mixing up your frame styles, sizes, and colors is key. Overlapping frames can add depth to the display, and keep it from looking bland.

To add variety, integrate a digital frame into the mix, like the new Nixplay Iris. Change the photo as often as you like or send new ones to the frame while you’re away. The stylish design and silk-metal finish means the Nixplay Iris can be integrated perfectly among your gallery and art frames.

  3. Be selective. When it comes to pictures of our children, it can be hard to choose a few favorites from the hundreds we have. However, it pays to select just a few of your absolute favorite images to display, rather than overwhelm your room with countless photographs all competing for attention.

If you do have a large collection of photos that you just have to display – say, from your recent travels to an exotic location, for example, or your family’s trip to a theme park – opt for smaller sizes. Use multi-photo frames or choose an unconventional display, like hanging them with clothespins on pinboards or bulletin boards.

  4. Choose antique frames for an unexpected touch. Hanging contemporary family photos in antique frames adds a unique, unexpected touch to your photo displays. Take care when matching your frames with images – you want the look to be interesting, but not jarring.

  5. Mix vintage family photos in with current ones. One fun way to add some history to your family photo display is to mix in vintage photos of relatives. Why not show off your grandparents’ wedding portrait, or an image of your great-uncle when he was a little boy? You could even scan and upload them to your Nixplay Iris cloud WiFi frame for a “vintage family” playlist.

Including these photos can not only add visual interest – it can also lend a narrative to your display. And you might be surprised at what good conversation starters old photos can make.

  6. Repurpose vintage windows, wooden pallets, or other items to create your own unique display. The best way to exhibit your family photos is the way that best reflects you and your family. If you’re crafty, there are all kinds of tasteful and uncommon displays you can create to show off your photos.

When making your display, you definitely want to consider how the materials will fit in with the rest of your decor, as well as the photos you plan to include. Some display ideas might look perfect with certain wall colors, frame styles, or picture formats, but not others.

Displaying your family photos can be a wonderful way to add some personality to your home. To make the Nixplay Iris a part of your decor, all you have to do is order it through our U.S. store.

Compile images of your graduate through the years, starting with baby pictures and going through today, or special pictures of the family who’s moving. Create a matching music playlist on your iPod, and you’ve got a perfect party starter.

2. Use your frame to help you de-stress.

Everyone can use a little help de-stressing now and then, and a digital frame can be a perfect visual aid. Upload soothing, calming photos of nature and place it on your desk at work or in a room where you spend a lot of time at home.

The best part of this is that you can change out the entire playlist whenever you like, adding or deleting new beautiful photos as you find them.

3. Use the frame to help welcome guests at your place of business.

Digital frames can also be a wonderful way to make guests feel more welcome when they come to your office or store. A digital frame with a smooth, modern design, like the Nixplay Iris, will fit perfectly in a reception area or doctor’s waiting room.

Retail businesses can use digital frames in a variety of ways to showcase their products. Clothing stores might mount digital frames in dressing rooms, to display style ideas or “how to wear” images. Interior designers and other home design businesses could use a digital frame in their showrooms, loading the frame with photos of their best work.

4. Turn it into an educational tool.

Digital frames can make great educational tools, as teachers know quite well. But whether you’re a teacher or not, you can still get some great use out of your frame by using it as a way to display trivia, historical facts, or vocabulary words.

This can be a fun addition to an office as well as the home.

5. Use it as a motivational tool.

Do you have a trip you’re saving up for, a career change you’re working toward, or another major life goal? Your digital frame can become a way to visualize that goal, helping you work harder toward meeting it.

If it’s a vacation you’re saving for, try loading the frame with images of the place you want to go. For career changers or people seeking promotion, create playlists of inspirational pictures – you could even include some motivational quotes. This will work just as well for other goals, too, from weight loss, to fitness, to education.

Digital frames have a number of uses beyond displaying the latest photos taken with your smartphone. With some creativity and effort, you can use your digital frame to bring a little extra joy into your home, your office, and your life.
