I Need Help With The Pile Of Artwork In The Corner

As a parent, nothing makes me prouder than seeing the arts and crafts projects my kids bring home from school. But as much as you’d like to keep each precious handmade creation, there will come a time when you have to ask: What are you supposed to do with all of the paintings, drawings, toilet paper-roll sculptures, paper mâché, egg carton creations, glitter bombs, science experiments, crafts, and other school work that your kids bring home nearly every week?

If you are like me, you do your best to sort what’s important and what’s worth recycling. Still, there is a corner in my house that is always full of artworks that symbolize a significant chapter of my kids’ lives. I want to preserve these accomplishments so that one day, my child can look back at them and be filled with nostalgia.

However, I also have a strong dislike for clutter.

As a working mom, simplicity was what I was after. Trying to be present for my children while building a business was tough. Juggling work, home, and school, in addition to keeping up with the playdates, meetings, and date nights, and finding time to sleep despite everything was even tougher. Coming home to a tidy house really helps alleviate stress.

Now, cleaning out extra clothes, furniture, household goods, and other tangible junk was seemingly easy for me. As Marie Kondo would ask, ‘Does it bring me joy?’ My answer, every time, is a heartfelt ‘No.’ But the first letters my kids drew, their own creations—these were harder to part with. These things did bring me joy, but there was so much of it that the piles have become overwhelming.

I felt like I was trying to organize our memories, something that felt familiar to me.

In 2018, I started SurroundUs! Services, a company that helps families organize and manage their digital photos and videos. I have observed that people want to surround themselves with their memories, achievements, and successes, but don’t always have the time and skills required to get this done. I know this because I am a working Mom who has been there and done that.

I was working as a software consultant for Oracle when I realized I needed someone with my skills to help me navigate through all of the available solutions. Thus, SurroundUs! Services was born, and I haven’t looked back. Helping people manage their memories and ensure that these are appropriately backed-up while still being accessible has become my passion.

Kids’ artwork logically fell into this same bucket. It was easy for me to scan my children’s 2D artwork and add it to our family’s photo library. But most of the artwork and things I wanted to save just weren’t flat enough.

But I was determined to find a solution.

Inspired by my classes as a film major ages ago, I took to photography and started to take pictures of all of the 3D artwork. The result was beautiful digitized versions of my kid’s artistic maturation, taken in a glitter-filled photography studio! I printed the images and bound them together in a book that the kids have cherished. But while the photobooks are fun to pick up and look through, I missed seeing my children’s art propped up by magnets on my fridge.

My Nixplay frame was the perfect complement to our new lifestyle. It was easy to set up a playlist and see my kids’ artwork shuffle through the last few years. It sparked conversations, reminded us of crafts created on rainy days, and more importantly, “sparked joy”! I was able to recycle and remove the last pile of clutter in my house and still celebrate my kids’ accomplishments. Mission accomplished!

How To Organize Your Desk To Become More Productive

If you’re looking for ways to improve your desk situation, you need not look further than Pinterest. A quick scroll will result in hundreds of photos of picture-perfect desks in every aesthetic you can imagine. And while they’re all beautiful, you have to wonder: Will you actually be able to get any work done on such a desk?

At the end of the day, even if you have all the latest bells and whistles on your picture-perfect desk, it won’t be effective if you don’t make the most of it. Here are some ways to do so:

Keep It Clutter-Free

You can’t do anything on a desk that’s laden with stacks of magazines, papers, and knickknacks from previous projects or tasks. Clean up your desk after every task, and treat it as a sacred space that should always be kept clear if possible. If there’s something on your workspace that you don’t need for the project you’re working on, keep it or throw it away.

Use A Second Monitor

If you’ve never used a second monitor, you’ll be surprised at how much it can improve your productivity. A second monitor effectively doubles the amount of on-screen real estate you can use, making it faster and easier to run multiple programs simultaneously. You can have Microsoft Word or Excel open on one screen and have a Skype call going on the other. Plus, connecting a second monitor to your laptop or desktop is pretty easy—all you need is an HDMI or VGA connector, and you’re all set.

Function Over Form

If your desk situation can be compared to the lyrics of “Twelve Days Of Christmas” (A dozen magazines, nine succulents, seven framed motivational quotes, five paperweights, two bookends, and a globe that needs a good dusting), you probably need to do some Marie Kondo-fying, stat.

“Keep it simple and functional with items you use all the time,” advises life coach and home organizer Meghan Meredith in an article published on Medium. “My desktop must-haves include a stapler; a jar of pens, pencils, and highlighters; a candle; and, most importantly, my planners.”

Display Your Favorite Photos

There’s more to life than your job! Don’t hesitate to spruce up your workspace with memories that spark joy. A Nixplay Smart Frame can display all your favorite photos, from scanned family photos from your childhood to phone pictures from a recent Disneyland trip with your nephews and nieces. You’ll be more inspired to work when you have your favorite memories on hand all the time.

Track Your Progress

When you’re at your desk, you should be motivated to work. One surefire way to achieve this? Put up your goals and to-do lists on a prominent spot on your desk. Write down your weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals and put them somewhere eye level so you’ll be pressured motivated to tick them off.

5 Cool Dads We Admire

Fatherhood isn’t easy, with its fair share of late nights, dirty diapers, toddler tantrums, and teenage angst. However, some dads make it look like a walk in the park (and no, we don’t mean Jurassic Park). Here are some utterly cool dads whom we look up to.

Will Smith

Will Smith isn’t just a fantastic Genie: the Aladdin star is also a certified cool dad to Willow and Jaden, his children with Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Trey, his son with his first wife, Sheree Zampino.

“We respect our children the way we would respect any other person,” said Will in an interview with Haute Living. “Things like cleaning up their room. You would never tell a full-grown adult to clean their room, so we don’t tell our kids to clean their rooms. Actually, we tell our kids ‘you don’t have a room, that’s our room and we are letting you borrow it.’”

David Beckham

David Beckham, the more handsome half of the power couple known as Posh and Becks, juggles a successful football career, multiple endorsements and events, and fatherhood with much aplomb. It wasn’t easy, though.

“I didn’t want to miss a second, but of course there were times that I couldn’t be there. I feared they would do something for the first time and I wouldn’t be there to see it,” he wrote in an essay for Men’s Health. “I knew that spending as much quality time with my kids as I could, especially when they were young, was the most important thing in the world…I also realized pretty quickly, that there are never enough hours in the day to do all the things we want to do with our kids so as long as we make whatever the time available to us quality time, where we are present, as dads we’re winning.”

Gordon Ramsay

The Hell’s Kitchen host may be terrifying towards adults who are hopelessly inept in the kitchen, but he’s quite a softie when it comes to kids. You can see Gordon’s tender side on Masterchef Junior, where he mentors young kitchen geniuses, as well as on Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch, where he banters with his cheeky children. He has also been very vocal about keeping his kids grounded despite his family’s fame.

In an article on The Telegraph, the top chef explains that his younger years were rough, and that he worked very hard so that his kids wouldn’t go through the same thing. “They have a completely different life than I did growing up. I worked [very hard] to get out of the mess that I grew up in and they’re grateful, they’re not spoilt.”

Prince William

Prince William’s children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, inspire him to do everything he can to make the world a better place.

“I worry about the future more,” he says when asked about how fatherhood changed his life in an article on Vanity Fair. “When you have something or someone in your life to give the future to, I think it focuses the mind more about what you’re giving them, and are you happy that you’ve done all you can to leave it in a good state.”

Barack Obama

What’s better than being the 44th President of the United States of America? For Barack Obama, it’s spending time with his daughters, Malia and Sasha. This is a hands-on dad who, despite occupying the most powerful position in the world, still coached Sasha’s grammar school basketball team and took the time to have a proper dinner with his family five times a week.

“It is in my capacities as a husband and a father that I entertain the most doubt,” Pres. Obama confesses in a Washington Post article. “I am a black man who grew up without a father, and I know the cost that I paid for that…And I also know that I have the capacity to break that cycle, and as a consequence, I think my daughters are better off.”

This Father’s Day, make sure to let the fathers in your life know just how much they mean to you by reminding them of your most treasured moments together. Place your favorite photos on a Nixplay Frame, and give it to dad–he’ll be in for a sweet surprise. Plus, we’re making it even sweeter: Get up to 25% off Nixplay and NIX frames, only until June 16!

How A Digital Nomad Stays Connected With Nixplay

A lot of people want to become digital nomads, as the freedom to work from anywhere you happen to be in the world is such an alluring prospect. Just imagine: You can be leisurely creating graphics in between dive sessions in the Maldives, or enjoying an après-ski drink in Switzerland before a conference call. Isn’t that just wonderful?

However, the digital nomad lifestyle entails a lot of hard work, discipline, and flexibility. Things won’t always go your way, and you have to be prepared for all sorts of mishaps. But there are some people who make it work, and who look good doing so.

Enter Pinsi Lei. This Guam native hustled hard as a freelancer and eventually built her own creative marketing agency. This gave her the freedom to work from nearly any destination in the world, her only requirement being a stable internet connection. We got to chat with her about her lifestyle as a creative nomad and how she keeps in touch with her loved ones while she’s on the go, and she dishes some helpful advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. Read on!

Hi Pinsi! Can you share some cool trivia about yourself so our readers can get to know you better?

I grew up in Guam, a beautiful island in the South Pacific, and moved to the States for college. The day after my college graduation, I drove to New York City in a rental car with my life’s belongings; jobless yet determined to live here. The energy and endless possibilities of this city drew me in and keep me from leaving.

Two years after college, I started Pinsi Lei Creative with a handful of clients I acquired while freelancing. Today, my creative marketing agency specializes in working with female-led businesses in wellness and education.

I love sharing my day-to-day NYC life and travels on my Instagram @pinsilei. Since my work is digital and remote, I have the flexibility to set up shop from any destination that has WiFi. I’m actually typing this a few steps from the Caribbean Sea right now!

We love your travel photos on Instagram. Which destinations are on your bucket list this summer? Why did you choose them?

I returned from Toronto a couple of weeks ago for business and I’m currently in Cancun. I found a great deal on the trip last week and booked it for this week. Living among skyscrapers in NYC makes me miss the beach and greenery.

I also just booked a cruise that stops in Belize, Honduras, and Mexico for next month. I guess you can’t take the island out of the girl?

Later this summer I’ll be going to China to celebrate my paternal grandmother’s 90th birthday. I haven’t seen my extended family in five years so I’m very excited about this reunion.

Traveling is always beguiling, but we wonder, how do you stay connected to your friends and family back home while you’re away?

I keep in touch with my friends from all over the world through social media. I DM my friends on Instagram daily and WeChat with my parents. We leave each other many voice messages and my father’s been on a roll with sending me funny articles and links.

My parents have a Nixplay frame and so does my husband’s grandparents. I love the Nixplay product because we can share our most current travel photos with the family seamlessly and in real-time.

Speaking of staying connected: You’re a Guam native who’s now conquering NYC. Do you ever get homesick? How do you deal with it?

I actually don’t get homesick, but I do miss the beach! My Chinese zodiac is the horse and I’d like to think I’m like a wild horse untethered by geography, free-roaming the earth. Very poetic, right?

How has Nixplay helped you stay connected to your loved ones while you’re on your adventures? Can you share how you’re using your Nixplay frame?

[My husband and I] gifted my parents and my husband’s grandparents Nixplay Frames last Christmas. I’m also gifting my father-in-law a Nixplay for Father’s Day this year! I can’t wait to see the surprise on his face.

Some of the albums we rotate on their frames include photos from our wedding and our travels.

It’s a great way to share beautiful past memories and also keep them updated on our current lives. I love that I can share my Instagram photos directly to their frames!

Since we can upload any image, I’m thinking of adding little surprise messages for my family members, especially during birthdays and holidays. My parents will especially appreciate this since I’ve been living on the other side of the world for over a decade ago.

How have you leveraged social media and your travel stories as an entrepreneur?

Besides working with hotels and restaurants as a travel influencer, I love to find female-led businesses to highlight at each destination. I think it’s important to support local businesswomen and share their stories. I also love it when my followers message me their local recommendations and I can, in turn, share them with my online audience.

Four years ago, the 193 countries of the United Nations agreed on a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. These 17 goals are called the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Goals. 🌱 — They are aimed to be reached by the year 2030. Why is this year significant for us? Because the leaders of 2030 are the YOUTH of today. If you’re born between the late 1970s to early 2000s, your generation will be running the world by 2030. 🙆🏻‍♀️🙆🏾‍♂️ — Knowing that young people are the leaders of the future, include them in your company’s strategy/goal setting/ mission driven conversations. Mentor them and give them the space to speak up at your meetings because their voices matter. Our future is dependent on the youth so let’s set them up for SUCCESS. 👍🏽💪💡

5 Signs You Have The Coolest Dad In The World

All fathers have the ability to transform into different forms, depending on the occasion. The man you’ve always known as a typical Workaholic Dad might turn into a Sporty Dad while coaching his son’s baseball team, then he’ll morph into a Geek Dad when he finally gets to put up his feet after dinner to watch his favorite TV show. And while all fathers are amazing, the best ones are, without a doubt, the Cool Dads—the kind of dad who always made you feel like you’re the luckiest kid in the world. Here are five signs that you have the coolest Dad in the world.

Your dad let you find your own path in life.

Some parents have very specific ideas of what their kids should be when they grow up: A doctor, a lawyer, maybe an engineer. Others expect their children to follow in their footsteps, or take over the family business. A cool dad won’t expect you to live out his dream, but will encourage you to follow your heart and do what you really want to do.

Your dad embraces his playful side.

When you were a kid, you probably have a friend whose dad who terrified you to no end. He wasn’t doing anything wrong per se, but he just gave off this intimidating, I’m-watching-you vibe that makes you want to get out of his sight immediately. And on the other hand, you have a friend who’s got a cool dad—one who’d crack jokes with you and your friends, whom you can ask for advice on even the most mundane things, and whom you don’t mind playing basketball or football with on a summer afternoon. A cool dad is reliable, but he also knows when to have fun.

Your dad treats your mom like the queen she is.

A truly cool dad knows how to treat his woman right. He loves and respects his wife, and won’t attempt anything that will harm his family. He sees his wife as his equal and never dismisses her role in the household. He’s an amazing role model not just to his children, but also to other families.

Your dad does the most selfless things for your family.

When you become an adult and realize just how hard it is to make money, you’ll gain a newfound appreciation of the things you probably took for granted as a child. Just think: Your mom and dad managed to provide for all your needs, put you through school, buy your toys and books, and take you on vacations. These don’t come cheap, and your dad probably scrimped and saved every cent he got just so you can have a great childhood. There’s also the small acts that prove how much your dad loves you, like waking up before dawn on weekends to take you to baseball practice and driving for hours on family vacations. See how much your dad loves you?

Your dad proudly uses or displays the things you made for him.

Remember all your janky middle school crafts projects? If your dad can display every single one of them on his desk at work, he would. He’d also have your childhood crayon drawings professionally framed, along with all the greeting cards you cobbled together for his past birthdays. You’re the love of his life, and in his eyes, everything you create is a masterpiece, a gift to be treasured for life.

This Father’s Day, surprise Dad with a Nixplay Frame! Get up to 25% off selected frames, only until June 16!
